I don’t have the most tranquil nighttime routine. I’m an incredibly light sleeper. How’s this for ironic: Going to bed gives me anxiety. I’m worried I won’t be able to fall asleep fast enough, and I’m worried that when I inevitably wake up in the middle of the night, I’ll toss and turn until sunrise. My friends and significant other are never surprised to get Instagram messages from me in the middle of the night. I’ve even called my mom at 5:30 a.m. just to chat. (She usually humors me, but she has also pointed out that it’s rude to call before 9 a.m. and has hung up on me. So there’s that.)
I have tried every single OTC sleeping aid out there, and nothing has left me feeling well-rested and refreshed in the a.m. There is always a tiny, yet horrible, hangover. This year, I vowed to create a p.m. cocktail of sorts. After a few months, I’m happy to report that it’s really helping. It goes like this: half an hour of easy yoga, followed by goop’s G.Nite bath soak in extra, extra hot water and chilled glass of Som, which is an amazing miracle. It’s light, with a touch of sweet-citrus, and especially delicious ice-cold. Having the glass of Som feels like I’m doing something good for myself wrapped up in a nighttime treat – getting hydrated while knowing restful sleep is on the way…what a win. At the same time, I do a sheet mask and watch what seems like a seven-hour-long meditation video an internet angel uploaded onto YouTube (thumbs up, subscribe from me).
Once I’m ready for bed, in my softest pajamas, I dab a little bedtime essential oil at my temples (the rollerball is nice and cooling), and I put on my eye mask for extra sleep insurance.
It’s been a process! But I finally feel like I’ve really figured it out. My bed doesn’t feel like a danger zone anymore, and my mom couldn’t be happier.
